It does not sound a lot. Most stories often take longer to read. But just 20 minutes of reading can make a big difference in the lives of our children.

Author Pamela DeLoatch’s article on Edudemic discusses some less obvious yet long-term positive effects of reading daily and not skipping the reading homework. Citing several different studies on effects of regular reading, she explains how reading improves kid’s math skills, makes them more empathetic, boosts their confidence, reduces frustration and anger due to improved communication skills and positively impacts the brain structure.

Such benefits are difficult to pass, except that it might not be easy for some children to read regularly. Some interesting suggestions made by the author to help develop in children a habit to read daily include modeling the habit of reading by parents, having variety in reading content and making reading a positive not punitive experience.
